About the University:
It is an affiliating and teaching University that aims to facilitate and promote studies, research and extension work in emerging areas of higher education with focus on professional education in the disciplines of engineering, technology, architecture, management, medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing, education, law, journalism and mass communication, etc. and also to achieve excellence in these and related fields and other matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

The University is recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC), India under section 12B of UGC Act. The University has been awarded the ISO 9001:2000 Certification by Standardization, Testing and Quality Certification Directorate, Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India, for a period of three years.

Located on the Old Block campus of the GGS Indraprastha University, the Department of Life Sciences started its activity since the inception of the University and there is no looking back since then. Under the leadership of Dr. Rita Singh, the department today is an active beehive of research being carried out in a wide variety of frontier areas as well as high quality post-graduate and doctoral programme.

1. Investigations on the Indian Gymnosperms. All India Co-ordinated Project on Taxonomy (AICOPTAX) funded by Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India.

2. Cycas pectinata complex of North Bank Landscape: Status, Survey and Conservation Action Plan. Funded by Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), USA

M.Sc. Biodiversity and Conservation
The post graduate Programme - M.Sc. Biodiversity and Conservation is the only of its kind in the country. Students of Manipur are encouraged to apply for this professional course. The aim of the Course is to provide the theoretical and practical background needed for those looking to pursue their career in the field of conservation of biological diversity and their natural habitats based on scientific research.

Intake: 15 Nos
Eligibility: B.Sc in Botany, Zoology, Biotechology, Biochemistry, Anthropology or any field of Life Sciences with minimum 50% marks.
Course structure: 2 years ( Semester wise)
Mode of Selection: Common Entrance test (CET)

PhD Programme:
The department have produced two PhDs under the supervision of Dr. Rita Singh. Presently Mr. Khuraijam Jibankumar Singh is working under the supervision of Dr. Rita Singh.

Best Teacher Award:
GGS Indraprastha University has tradition of honorary one of its faculty with the Best Teacher Award, which is based upon students evaluation, self assessment and peer group evaluation. Out of four Best Teacher Awards, given so far by the University , the department is the proud recipient of the first Best Teacher Award which was given to Dr. Rita Singh.
